A odisseia final do "MOL Comfort"

The 2008-built MOL Comfort broke in half on June 17, 2013 while underway about 200 miles from the Yemeni coast with a load of 7,041 TEUs. All 26 crew – made up 11 Russians, 1 Ukrainian and 14 Filipinos – escaped the sinking ship on two life rafts and a lifeboat


Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) has just reported that the aft section of the MOL Comfort has sunk near 14’26”N 66’26”E at 16:48 JST (11:48 Dubai time) on June 27. With a water depth of 4,000 meters, no further salvage of the ship will be possible due to the extreme ocean depth.







The fore part is being stably towed as depicted in the following images sent to us this morning. Images were taken by Captain Svend Degn, master of the MV Torm Thyra.

MOL Comfort inferno impossible to douse

The fire on the fore section of the stricken MOL Comfort boxship continues to rage for a fourth straight day with neither the appointed salvage team, Smit, nor the Indian Coast Guard able to douse it.

A fire broke out from the rear end of the fore part of the 7,000 teu ship on July 6, and one tug boat and two rescue boats responded to the fire. On top of these three boats, the salvage company requested the assistance of the Indian Coast Guard for fire fighting, and their patrol boat Samudra Prahari with an external fire fighting system, arrived at the scene early on July 8, and started fire fighting with the others immediately.

“However, due to adverse weather, the work has not been progressing smoothly and the fire is not yet under control.

Observations show that many containers on the deck have been burnt out,” the ship’s owner Mitsui OSK Lines of Japan said in a release today.

The MOL Comfort split in two on June 17 200 nautical miles off Yemen with the stern section sinking 10 days later.  [09/07/13]

The MOL Comfort saga has come to an end.

According to an emailed report by the Indian Coast Guard, the burned out wreck parted her tow line and disappeared into the inky depths of the Indian Ocean at around 0100 IST.

Her last position was at 19’56″N 65’25″E, in a water depth of about 3,000 meters according to Mitsui O.S.K. Lines.
